Life in Review
“Consequence” by Hazel Statham
August 12, 2011
by Michelle Vasquez
Consequence by Hazel Statham is a lovely Regency era romance about love, forgiveness, and redemption.
Marcel, also known as the Duke of Lear, has a real bad-boy reputation and this time a duel may get him in some serious trouble. He acts on the advice of others and leaves the country for a while to let things quiet down before he comes back. He visits his cousin in Paris to spend some time with him and there he meets the Markhams.
When Marcel meets Julie Markham he begins to think he may have met the woman of his dreams. However, when disturbing news comes from home he realizes that she may not be able to overlook everything in his past.
I very highly recommend this book. It’s a beautifully written Regency era story that will hook you from the very start. It’s fast-paced and full of action. The characters will steal your heart and will have you rooting for them. I really love Ms Statham’s writing and her Regency novels! I am always excited to see when she comes out with a new book.

Reviews by Molly

My Review:
I've been a big fan of Hazel Statham since I read her book The Portrait. She just has such a way with regency novels and with her words and creation of her characters. I knew when the chance to review this newest book Consequence, I was going to jump on it.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. Marcel and Julie's characters were vivid and filled with awesome personality. Marcel flees to France after a duel, and meets Julie. Like Marcel, I feel in love with Julie...she's such a tender character. They marry, but Julie starts to listen to the rumors of Marcel's less than perfect past a wild rake, and that they married out of convenience.

Marcel is determined to prove her wrong and show her she truly owns his heart. He'll do what ever it takes to face the consequences of his past and move forward with his beautiful, loving wife, Julie. If only she'll listen to him.

I truly had a wonderful time reading this book. I saw myself among the soirees and theater with Marcel and Julie, and Aunt Augusta. It was so fun watching Marcel redeem his past actions and move forward with Julie. This story of trusting, love, forgiveness and redemption will instantly grab you and take you on a ride and by the end, you'll be ready to pick up another Hazel Statham novel! I love her work and you will, too! Another fantastic 5 book rating in my eyes!

The Hot Author Report

There’s nothing like starting off a novel with a good old fashioned duel.
Hazel Statham has written another lovely historical romance with Consequence. When the Duke of Lear must flee to his cousin in Paris, he doesn’t expect to find strong willed Julie, who is more than a match for his wits. Both headstrong and feisty, Marcel and Julie make for a pair that kept me turning the pages.
I highly enjoyed Marcel and Julie’s exchanges – especially at the beginning of the relationship. There is something about a battle of wills, as Marcel calls it, that really gets me to care about the characters and their romance. In many of Marcel’s and Julie’s scenes together, I found myself smiling.
Statham’s true strength in Consequence has to be the dialogue for me. The words said, especially between Marcel and Julie, are beautiful and sometimes verging on being poetry. I know I mentioned before how much I love their exchanges, but the dialogue needs to be commented on again.
Statham occasionally wanders into using fancy words instead of the word ‘said’, which made a sentence here and there clunky. But there wasn’t anything that threw me out of the story entirely. The threat of that came more from the names. In historical stories, people with titles are often referred to their titles by some people and their surnames by others. While historically accurate, I did find myself double-checking a couple times in the beginning to make sure I knew who was speaking.

If you like Hazel Statham’s work, then you should certainly continue on with Consequence. If you’re not familiar with her, then Consequence is a great introduction to her work and a fun book to read.

Review from The Book Connection

The Duke of Lear’s rakish past seems to be known by everyone except his new wife, the young and beautiful Julie Markham. When Marcel’s secret is discovered, Julie is convinced she has been duped into entering into a marriage of convenience to satisfy the king. A chasm grows between Marcel and his bride, but he is determined to woo her and prove his reformation and undying love. Consequence by Hazel Statham will capture your heart and encourage you to believe that love conquerors all.
